The Armor’s Pulls Toward Spiritual Maturity

I had an interesting thought after my morning prayer time about another way to look at the armor of God. It is one of my favorite verses and I use it to remind myself of what is important. Paul urges us to suit up in the Spiritual battle gear so that we might be able to stand against “the schemes of the devil.” It is found in Ephesians 6:10-20.

The six pieces in my words are:

  1. Belt of Truth
  2. Breastplate of righteousness
  3. Shoes of the ”readiness of the gospel of peace”
  4. Shield of faith
  5. Helmet of salvation
  6. Sword of spirit which is the Word of God

What if we were to consider these as our path toward Spiritual maturity rather than just as a protective suit we put on when we are being attacked? Let me explain.

Belt of Truth – All Christians had a moment when they realized that God is real, the Bible is true and Jesus is the very essence of truth. In the Bible Jesus says “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6 MEV) This realization is a first step we take on our Christian adventure.

Breastplate of righteousness – But as new Christians we are struck by God’s total otherness, holiness His righteousness. Its something we don’t have but His grace, unearned favor, covers us through the blood of Jesus. In an amazing supernatural exchange Jesus’ righteousness becomes ours. WOW!

Shoes of the ”readiness of the gospel of peace” – About the time we come to internalize this fact we come to realize in our Spirit that we have a peace in our hearts that is bigger than we are. We are ready to extent this peace to others. There is nothing better than having peace with our maker and with our neighbors.

Shield of faith – In this early season in our Spiritual journey our faith rises and begins to strengthen. We gain the confidence that this is a saving faith that can fend off vicious attacks and take us with the Lord into eternity.

Helmet of salvation – The certainty of my saving faith makes me want to wear it on my head like an expensive Stetson.

Sword of spirit which is the Word of God – Suddenly the Bible starts to make sense. It becomes sweeter everyday and we begin to consume it as we would a bowl of homemade ice cream. Verses come to mind as we go through the activities of our life. In fact we start to aggressively apply its unchanging message in all we do.

Applying the armor in this way reminds me of what the Bible says in Philippians 2:12, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”

I pray Lord my different way of looking at the armor is part of my Spiritual maturity and that it blesses You.
