Our Treasures

In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus said:“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (NKJ)

I noticed a new storage facility that recently went up just down the road called “Another Closet.” I was curious about this business so I did a quick internet search. I discovered the self-storage industry has been the fastest growing segment of the commercial real estate industry over the last 35 years.

I don’t rent a storage unit, but I do have a two car garage by my house where I can only park one car. I store stuff in the garage that won’t fit in the house.

Hebrews 13:5 says: Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (NKJ)

On April 10 at about 11 PM I began having chest pain. Tonyia insisted we go to the Emergency room in Boerne. They confirmed that I was having a heart attack and that I needed immediate surgery. My exam room filled with medical professionals scurrying around. They loaded me on an ambulance headed for San Antonio. They told Tonyia who was going to follow in our vehicle, don’t try to keep up.

I was fully conscious and realized that at any moment I might die. As we raced along at 100 miles per hour, I began to pray. A strange thing happened – I realized I was not afraid.

Once at the hospital they rushed me immediately into surgery. They used a local anesthetic and IV pain medicine, but I was fully awake as they ran a tube up one of my veins and installed stints that expanded to restore blood flow to my heart.

I kept my eyes closed and my mind on Jesus. Believe me during this time the stuff I had accumulated in my home or in my garage was worthless. Jesus was what mattered! I know that Jesus died for our sins, but more importantly to me at that moment was that Jesus beat death and rose to life again. He promises us where He is we will be also.

I declare to you today that Jesus is alive and on His throne and that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39 NKJ).

Are you ready to come face-to-face with death? I am now deeply aware that we do not know how long we will be here. I plead with you this morning to examine your life. Ask yourself what is most important.

If you knew the world will end tomorrow what would you do? Don’t wait another minute to get right with God. Take to heart that Jesus is our greatest treasure and HE is alive and on His throne.

In 1 Corinthians 11:28 it says: “Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.”

Today as we prepare our hearts for communion take stock of your heavenly storehouse. Are you storing up what is most important?
