Highway of Holiness

way2 Isa35The Lord put Holiness on my mind. It started Sunday morning, I even mentioned it in our small Covenant Life church service in Ennis. Last evening I had a restless night, two simple words would not go away: Holiness – Way. I was up earlier and found Holy and Holiness was listed 105 times in my Bible’s concordance. But once I saw Isaiah 35:8-9 I knew it was where the Holy spirit wanted me.

A highway shall be there, a roadway, and it shall be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass on it, but it shall be for the wayfaring men, and fools shall not wander on it. No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up on it; these shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there, (Isaiah 35:8-9 MEV)

“Highway of Holiness” and “wayfaring men” stuck. It is a call to Holiness, and not just for a season – forever. It is a summons to follow what Jesus said in Matthew, “small is the gate and narrow is the way which leads to life…” (Matthew 7:14). Once again I was drawn to Isaiah, this time to 6:2 where the great profit had a vision. He was in the presence of the Lord as He was on the throne and a creature Isaiah saw was saying “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of Hosts…”

Isaiah expresses what I felt reading his account, “Woe is me! I am undone because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips…” John had a similar experience in Revelation 4:8 he saw creatures saying without ceasing “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come…”

We don’t talk about Holiness much in or out of the church. But I strongly believe we are being called to Holiness - not just repentance. “Come out from among them and be separate, say the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters says the Lord Almighty (2 Corinthians 6:17-18).

Paul was paraphrasing Isaiah and he goes on to say “Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

Okay, fellow wayfaring persons are we ready to travel the Highway of Holiness together? Are we truly separate, obviously followers of The Way? I will never be able to stand before a Holy God alone, but that was the point of Jesus’ trip to my world. His blood was shed for that very reason. I lean on His perfect Holiness knowing I can never stand without Him. I have the power of the Holy Spirit who will guide me all The Way down the Highway of Holiness.

Lord You are a Holy God and I yield to You.
