A Penny

A penny has virtually no value. We can’t buy anything with them unless we have a bunch; and then they are just too heavy to carry around. I don’t like to get them as change, and when I do they go into the little cup on the merchant’s counter or sometimes even in the trash. It has not always been this way. When pennies were originally made they had great importance as currency – but not today.

We humans are like pennies. When we were originally made we were shining examples of God’s greatest creation, but something happened when we exercised our free will to rebel against His Holiness; we became de-valued. We were spiritually bankrupt.

Psalms 14:2-3 says. The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men. To see if there are any who understand, Who seek after God. They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one.

I work next to a factory where we bring in parts from all over the world and use them to assemble LED outdoor lights. The factory is a value-add processer. The parts and pieces have little value by themselves, but because of the assembly procedures a finished light is produced that has great value.

Between my fingers I hold a special penny. This penny has been modified to have a cross cut out of its center. In my mind the modification is a tremendous value add process. I hold on to these pennies. In fact I even hand these pennies to some folks I meet in my travels. Because of the cross most of them see the added value too. But, some reject them.

The same holds true for us. Jesus died on the cross to pay the sin debt that had devalued us as humans. If we are sorry for our sinful ways and accept His free gift, by faith, we too greatly increase in value because we join God’s spiritual kingdom. The cross is the ultimate value added process for we humans, because, if we accept it, it restores us into an eternal joyful relationship with God.

Hear what Jesus said in Matthew 10:29-32, Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows. “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. (NASB)

As you take communion today remember that you have tremendous value and are united to God because of the process at the cross. Jesus paid our spiritual debt and we will never get a better gift in all eternity.
